The Pakistan under-16 football team which recently won the South Asian Football U-16 Championship in Nepal, is leaving for Kuwait City, Kuwait on Saturday, 10th September 2011, through Oman Airline (WY)-328 at 0630 PST from Lahore to Masqat and from Masqat WY-647 @ 1905 OST to Kuwait City to take part in Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship 2012 qualifiers to be held in Kuwait from September 12-22, 2011.
According to the press release issued here by Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, President PFF wished U-16 Football team the best. He hoped they shall play in an outstanding manner as the peoples of Pakistan are looking for a victory by their young players. He hoped and prayed that the team shall show the same colour as SAFF U-16 Championship title in Nepal. He expressed his satisfaction on their training and the ability to play well. On this occasion he said that they are our future players in the big league.
Col. ® Ahmed Yar Khan Lodhi, Secretary General PFF expressed his satisfaction in their training and coaching ability and hoped that management shall look well after the team during their visit to Kuwait a brotherly country of Pakistan and hope that they will at home there. He reposed his full confidence in the team and wished them all the best.
Pakistan has been placed in Group B with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Yemen, Kuwait, Maldives and Afghanistan. All the matches of the group will be conducted at the Mohammed Al Hamad Stadium and Sabah Al Salem Stadium in Kuwait. Pakistan will open their mission on September 12 with the match against Maldives, followed by their games against Kuwait on September 14, UAE on September 17, Afghanistan on September 19 and against Yemen on September 22. Two teams from the group will make it to the tournament proper which will be held next year.
Overall 39 teams from zones west (22 teams) and East (17) have been placed in seven different groups. Top two teams from each of the groups and the best third placed team from West and East Zone will qualify for the next year’s tournament. The reigning champion of U-16 championship is DPR Korea as they had defeated host Uzbekistan in the 2010 edition final 2-0 in Tashkent.
